In a recent media release, Aged & Community Care Victoria (ACCV) has welcomed the $3.7 billion aged care reform package, 'Living Better Living Well" which was announced last month by the federal government.
The reform package includes significant increases to in-home care funding, dementia support, a commitment to a larger aged care work force and flexibility in aged care repayments.
"Aged and Community Care Victoria CEO, Gerard Mansour said the package "provides a significant step forward in our quest for a viable, fair and sustainable industry, one that can deliver access and choice for older Australians and enable them to age well".

Arcare is a leading aged care provider in Melbourne.
Keeping an elderly person active and involved in the world around them can help maximise their health and vitality. Many nursing homes understand this and run plenty of activities to keep their residents entertained and active.
If you have someone close to you that is elderly, or you simply want to become a volunteer visitor at a local aged care facility, here are several great ideas for keeping the elderly active in both mind and body.
Several low impact sports for the elderly include lawn bowls, golf, aqua aerobics, walking or yoga and stretching, specifically designed with senior people in mind. Gardening is another great outdoor activity for the elderly, as it is low impact, can be done at a leisurely pace and provides plenty of enjoyment.
Mental exercises such as puzzles, memory games, cross words, cards, mathematical calculations, or even quizzes with questions based around the era they grew up in are great ways to keep the minds of elderly people stimulated, and research even suggests it helps prevent or postpone the need for dementia care.
This short documentary explores Art Therapy as another popular and highly beneficial activity for elderly people. Research shows when older adults are involved in participatory arts programs, over a period of time their health actually improves. Art therapy not only encourages their creativity and self-expression, it provides a good social outlet and can be a lot of fun too.

Information provided by Arcare, leaders for Aged Care in Melbourne
If you or a member of your family is considering options for aged care, then chances are you’re going to require the services of an Aged Care Assessor (ACAT).
An ACAT assessment is a free, government funded assessment designed to determine the best and most appropriate care options for an elderly person who is having difficulty living at home. All ACAT assessments are carried out by Aged Care Assessors, who are trained health care professionals, registered with the Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency.
An ACAT assessment involves an Aged Care Assessor visiting the individual in their home and discussing their lifestyle and health needs, as well as providing information and advice on aged care options. The assessment is then used to approve eligibility for either residential aged care or at-home care.
Those approved for respite care or high-level residential care will not require another assessment unless the care needs change considerably. For those requiring low-level care, the assessment is valid for 12 months.
Your doctor, local hospital or health centre can refer you to the nearest ACAT, or you can find a list of registered ACATs on the Aged Care Australia website.
Once you’ve completed an Aged Care Assessment, you can then start looking at suitable aged care options.
